I am often asked if folks can make copies of Unbound Word products? The answer? No. In order to fully understand, you need to learn . . . the whole story.
In spite of the clearly designated © symbol, this question is asked repeatedly by well-intended brethren. As the author, owner, and publisher, it puts me in a difficult position. There is little reason to use the © symbol if you allow folks to make copies. So, I do not grant permission. People who really know me, also know that I would never take a brother or sister “to court” for violating the copyright law.
Isaiah 1:18 says, “Come, let us reason together.” Reasonable people should be able to reach sensible conclusions. In 1971 (when I first went inside Dallas County Jail), I could find zero teaching material that directly addressed the prisoner’s spiritual needs. If I did find some-thing, it was “out of print.” Why? Most of them had “given” their material away, let others make copies, and had no money to print more themselves.
At first, I made the same mistake. In 1974, I authored the five-lesson course: “There IS a Better Way.” The first printing cost me $500 for 500 sets. I thought 500 sets would last me 25 years - at least! Well, I was out of lessons in less than 6 months and as broke as the proverbial “church mouse.” At that time, I made the decision to start this little publishing company – not to get rich but “charge” enough to be able to keep material “in print” and in circulation.
I knew I had to come up with a “name” for this humble enterprise. After much study and prayer, I selected “Unbound Word” based on the King James Version’s rendering of II Timothy 2:9 (the Word of God cannot be bound). After all, our objective is to penetrate the darkest corners – even prisoners, including those on Death Rows.
Today, Unbound Word still charges only 85 cents per set of “There IS a Better Way” - including the certificate and grading key. The lessons are on legal-size paper, each in a different color, printed on both sides, and folded. Legal-size paper is more expensive than letter-size. Colored paper is more expensive than white paper. Certificates are two-colored and printed on still more expensive paper. Why do we charge so little? Answer: We know jail/prison programs are not well-funded. We (hopefully) get the scraps from the local church’s annual budget. Unbound Word works hard to maintain low prices.
Comparing “apples” with “apples” – I do not see how “copies” can be made for less than 85 cents per set (especially when you factor in the paper, copier cost, ink, maintenance, time for a person to stand over the machine, feed the paper in and resolve malfunctions plus, do the folding)…and then, print certificates! I have seen many of these illegal products and frankly, they are of embarrassingly poor quality. I hate to even see the Unbound Word label on them. Copy machines are notorious for smudging, ink bleeding through and on the backside. The copy machine’s registry on two-sided copies is poor. Many fold the lessons poorly. I believe sloppy products send a negative message to students.
Still, thousands of copies are made every month of just this one course! If only 3000 illegal sets are made per month, they rob Unbound Word of $2,550 every 30 days. The numbers reach into tens of thousands of dollars when you add in our 16 other courses . . .
Hopefully, this explanation helps you understand our situation. Let’s reason and work together to use products that are attractive, powerful, enduring, and cost-effective.
